A rare early Hermès travelling suitcase, France, circa 1930.
Of rectangular form, the case is covered in cream canvas and reinforced with stitched leather corner protectors and edging, secured with rows of metal studs. The front is fitted with brass hardware, including a central lock and two clasps, together with its original leather carrying handle.
The hinged lid opens to reveal a cream fabric-lined interior fitted with retaining straps and compartments for organising clothing and personal effects. The case retains its original key, attached to the interior.
A particularly elegant example of interwar luxury travel, the suitcase reflects the restrained and highly functional aesthetic for which Hermès luggage of the period is known. Founded in Paris in 1837 by Thierry Hermès as a harness and saddlery workshop, the house gradually expanded into finely made leather goods and luggage as travel by motorcar, rail and ocean liner became increasingly fashionable among its international clientele. Early Hermès luggage was produced in comparatively limited numbers and is considerably less commonly encountered today than contemporary examples by some of the other great French trunk makers.
Condition: in good vintage condition with general wear, marks, staining and discolouration to the canvas and interior consistent with age and use. The leather handle shows wear and patination, while the brass fittings have developed an attractive aged finish. Please refer to photographs.
