An exceptional early Louis Vuitton wardrobe trunk, dating from the early 20th century and retaining its original Louis Vuitton retailer’s label to the interior.
The trunk is covered in the house’s iconic Monogram canvas, introduced by Georges Vuitton in 1896, with the distinctive interlocking LV initials and floral motifs. The exterior is reinforced with black protective edging, brass studs and hardware, wooden slats and substantial side carrying handles, giving the trunk the robust construction associated with Louis Vuitton’s luggage from this period.
Of particularly desirable wardrobe form, the trunk opens to reveal a fitted interior designed for the organised transport of clothing and personal effects. The surviving interior label is an important feature, identifying the trunk as an authentic Louis Vuitton piece and providing further evidence of its period manufacture.
Wardrobe trunks represented an important development in luxury travel during the early 20th century, effectively creating a portable wardrobe for wealthy travellers undertaking extended journeys by rail, ocean liner and motor car. Louis Vuitton became one of the foremost makers of such luggage, combining ingenious fitted interiors with exceptionally durable construction.
Dimensions: 90cm wide, 55cm high, 50 cm deep (TBC)
Condition: in good antique condition with considerable surface wear, scuffs, marks and losses consistent with age and extensive use. The Monogram canvas, leather and metal fittings display an attractive, naturally aged patina. Please refer to photographs.
