A damier canvas cabin trunk by Louis Vuitton, France, circa 1900
An exceptional and unusually low-format Louis Vuitton wardrobe trunk, made in France circa 1900 and covered in the house’s celebrated Damier canvas.
Measuring approximately 100 cm wide, the trunk has particularly impressive proportions, with its long, shallow form designed for the organised transportation of clothing. The exterior is reinforced with wooden slats and leather edging, together with brass corner protectors, studs, locks and hardware.
The trunk opens to reveal its original cream-coloured fitted interior. The upper compartment incorporates retaining straps for securing clothing during travel, while the underside of the lid retains its distinctive diamond-pattern ribbon organiser. A lower drawer provides further storage and is fitted with its original leather pull handle.
Introduced by Louis Vuitton in 1888, Damier canvas predates the celebrated Monogram pattern and is particularly associated with the firm's earliest surviving luxury travel trunks. The combination of the early Damier covering, generous width and remarkably practical fitted interior makes this a particularly decorative example from the golden age of luxury travel.
Condition: in good antique condition with extensive surface wear, scuffs, marks, staining and discolouration consistent with age and use. There is expected wear to the canvas, leather, brass fittings and original interior, all contributing to an attractive aged patina. Please refer to photographs.
Dimensions: 100cm wide, 33cm high, 50cm deep
