An exceptional early Louis Vuitton wardrobe trunk, made in France circa 1900 and covered in the house’s celebrated Damier canvas.
Introduced by Louis Vuitton in 1888, the distinctive chequerboard Damier canvas predates the famous Monogram pattern and was conceived in part to distinguish the company’s luggage from the numerous imitations that followed its success. Surviving examples from this early period are particularly desirable amongst collectors of historic Louis Vuitton luggage.
Of substantial rectangular form, the trunk is reinforced with wooden slats, black protective edging, brass studs and hardware, and retains remnants of historic travel labels to the exterior. The front is fitted with a central brass lock and characteristic Louis Vuitton fittings.
The interior retains its original Louis Vuitton label, an important feature of this remarkably complete early example.
Condition: in good antique condition with extensive surface wear, scuffs, marks, staining and losses consistent with its considerable age and history of travel. The canvas, wooden slats, metal fittings and interior have developed an attractive and authentic aged patina. Please refer to photographs.
