An exceptional early Louis Vuitton travelling trunk, dating from circa 1920 and with distinguished British provenance.
The trunk is covered in Louis Vuitton’s signature Monogram canvas, introduced by Georges Vuitton in 1896, with the corners and edges reinforced by embossed leather straps and extensive brass hardware and studs. The exterior bears the painted initials ‘F. E. St. J.’, providing a direct and particularly attractive link to its original owner.
The top opens to reveal the original light-coloured fitted and quilted interior, with a studded ribbon paper organiser to the underside of the lid. The interior retains the Louis Vuitton retailer’s label and is stamped with serial number 210872. Of substantial proportions and characteristic of the sophisticated luggage produced by Louis Vuitton for wealthy international travellers during the early decades of the 20th century.
Provenance: Florence Emily Grenfell, Lady St Just (née Henderson, 1856–1925).
Florence Emily Henderson married Edward Charles Grenfell in 1913. Grenfell was one of the leading figures in British banking, becoming a partner of J. S. Morgan & Co.; his prominence was such that the London banking house subsequently became Morgan, Grenfell & Co. He later represented the City of London in Parliament and, after Florence's death, was elevated to the peerage as Baron St Just in 1935. The painted initials ‘F. E. St. J.’ make the provenance especially evocative, connecting this luxurious piece of early Louis Vuitton luggage with a family at the heart of Britain's financial and social establishment during the early 20th century.
Condition: in good antique condition with extensive surface wear, scuffs, marks and losses consistent with age and use. The monogram canvas, leather straps and metal fittings have developed an attractive aged patina, while the interior shows expected wear and discolouration. Please refer to photographs.
