A Campari "Lo Spiritello" advertising poster after Leonetto Cappiello, Italy, 1970s
A striking Italian offset lithographic advertising poster for Campari, produced during the 1970s after Leonetto Cappiello's celebrated Lo Spiritello design of 1921. One of the most recognisable images in the history of advertising, Cappiello's exuberant composition has become synonymous with both the Campari brand and the golden age of European poster art.
The design depicts the mischievous figure known as Lo Spiritello ("The Little Spirit"), dressed in a vivid red polka-dot costume and balancing a bottle of Campari while emerging from a dramatic curling orange peel. Set against a deep black background, the brilliant colours and simplified forms create an unforgettable visual impact, perfectly illustrating Cappiello's revolutionary approach to commercial advertising. The bold green Campari lettering anchors the composition, while the playful figure embodies the lively, sophisticated spirit that the company sought to associate with its famous aperitif.
Originally created in 1921, Lo Spiritello is widely regarded as one of Leonetto Cappiello's greatest masterpieces. Often described as the father of modern advertising, Cappiello abandoned the highly decorative Art Nouveau style in favour of bold, simplified imagery set against dark backgrounds, producing posters that were instantly recognisable from a distance. His work transformed commercial poster design and remains among the most influential graphic art of the twentieth century.
This example is a licensed Italian offset lithographic reprint produced during the 1970s by Officine Grafiche Ricordi, Milan, one of Italy's most prestigious printing houses. The printer's credit appears along the lower margin and is consistent with authorised mid-century reproductions issued for decorative display, allowing a new generation to enjoy Cappiello's iconic imagery while preserving the integrity of the original design.
Today, Cappiello's Campari posters are among the most sought-after images in the history of advertising art. Their bold graphics, timeless composition, and enduring association with Italian aperitif culture have made them favourites with collectors of vintage posters, graphic design, and twentieth-century decorative art. This licensed period reprint offers the same exceptional visual impact as the original while remaining an attractive and highly decorative piece in its own right.
Condition is good overall and commensurate with age. The poster displays minor age-related wear and light handling marks consistent with a 1970s offset lithograph. The colours remain vibrant, the image presents exceptionally well, and the poster is framed and ready for display. Please refer to the photographs.
