A coromandel and silver-plated three-decanter tantalus, England, circa 1900
A fine English three-decanter tantalus dating from the late Victorian or Edwardian period, circa 1900.
The substantial coromandel case is fitted with silver-plated mounts and carrying handle, housing three matching square hobnail-cut glass spirit decanters, each surmounted by a faceted spherical stopper. The hinged locking bar secures the decanters in place and can be raised to allow their removal.
The name “tantalus” derives from Tantalus of Greek mythology, who was condemned to stand with food and water perpetually just beyond his reach, an appropriate name for a device designed to leave the spirits temptingly visible while inaccessible when locked.
Condition: in good antique condition with wear, marks and patination consistent with age and use. The key is lacking. Please refer to photographs.
